Information about the life of the Alligator and types of Alligator

Crocodiles are the reptiles that have lived with us for more than 240 million years and today they are the largest reptiles that populate the earth.

With us you will be able to know the evolution that this species has followed for so many years as well as knowing other species that have emerged from the primitive ones and that currently live with us.

You will also have the opportunity to know other data and information of great interest so you just have to keep reading to find out.

Crocodiles are one of the largest predator species that exists on earth even more than tigers and lions and other predators that we can find today.

They are only surpassed by aquatic animals like the white shark and the whale for the rest they are the largest carnivorous animals by far.

The morphology of crocodiles is based on a flat and elongated body, in which the tail occupies almost half the length of its body.

The upper part of this reptile is usually always much darker in color than the ventral area as well as this lower area will be much softer than the upper one, which is usually reinforced in many species by ridges and bony protrusions that protect it, of possible predators and their attacks.

Perhaps the part that stands out most in crocodiles are their jaws, elongated and with teeth that, if added to the strength and power of the jaws that these reptiles have, are capable of breaking and breaking any bone.

However, a very curious detail is that these animals when they have their young are able to transport them in their mouth without making just a scratch, as well as when they are about to be born, they gently bite the shell of their young in order to help them come out, more easily from their eggs.

Difference between crocodile and alligator

Crocodiles and alligators have some differences that can be seen with the naked eye and that cause these species to be grouped into different classifications.

In the snout we can see the first distinction, since the crocodiles will have a much thinner and longer one, being one of the typical images that we find of these reptiles.

However, alligators have a much shorter and wider nose, but at the same time stronger and more powerful.

Another of the different characteristics between these two animals is their habitat.

Crocodiles have the possibility of living in both fresh and salty waters, however, alligators do not have this quality, so we will always find them in the upper parts of rivers or even in lakes and ponds.

Where crocodiles live

You can find these reptiles practically all over the world, but above all you will find them in the tropical and subtropical zone, being located in a greater proportion both in Africa and Central America, although there are also species that live in Asia.

Crocodiles have special characteristics that make them need, like many other reptiles, environmental factors to help them survive in the environment.

One of these factors is humidity, since they need it so that their body does not dry out and to be healthy, so it will be common to see them near the mouths of rivers, in coastal areas, in swamps or in certain lakes whose salinity is correct for them.

Although many species can live in freshwater rivers, they prefer, due to the composition of their skin, to live in places where the water has an acceptable salinity, since this helps them to recover mineral salts in their body that provide benefits.

Another factor that they will take into account for their survival is the need for those places to have long periods in which the Sun is warming, fleeing of course from the territories where rain is more common.

The Sun provides vitamins and helps them to grow and strengthen theirskin, hardening it and making it more resistant against attacks from other animals, so they must take the sun's rays for long periods of time a day.

What crocodiles eat

Crocodiles need not say that they are carnivorous animals, since simply by looking at their teeth we can get an idea of what they can do to their prey.

Crocodiles are quite opportunistic reptiles, in the sense that they will feed and they will be seen attacking any type of animal that is in their way.

When it is young, it is very common for it to feed on fish or crustaceans that it finds when it is in the water, however when it is an adult it's capable of hunting larger mammals like horses, camels, among others. For other species of crocodiles such as alligators, they will only feed on small animals.
