Rhinoceros are distinguished by great strength that is different from the animals we know about

Rhinos are unique large animals that have really thick gray skin.

There are five different types of rhinoceros today and it is an animal with a very striking horn that makes it currently in danger of extinction due to poaching.

Rhino characteristics

The scientific name of this large mammal is Rhinocerotidae, although later their names vary depending on the different species, with the White rhinoceros, the Indian rhinoceros, the Black rhinoceros, the Javan rhinoceros, and the Sumatra rhinoceros.

The main characteristics of the rhinoceros include that it is a large mammal that is currently in danger of extinction.

In addition, providing some more information about the rhinoceros, it should be noted that it is an animal that has a large horn and its description cannot be without allusions to its hard rough gray skin and its resemblance to the ancient dinosaurs. Rhinos are animals that also tend to live alone, although some of their species are more sociable than others and can live in company.

It is an animal that is quite violent by nature, although it does not attack to feed itself since it is herbivorous, it does so because it does not have very good vision and that is why it does not know what is happening, many times attack to defend yourself from what you consider to be a danger.

Where do rhinos live?

Rhino habitat varies depending on the species. The white rhino can be found in South Africa and is the most abundant in the world. The black rhino can be found in the desert savannas and semi-desert areas of Namibia

While, if you want to know where the Indian rhinoceros lives, you should know that its natural habitat was the areas between Pakistan and Burma, and even reached China, but currently it is only found in the areas of Assam and Nepal located in India, in the spectacular grasslands and forests that make up the hills south of the Himalayas.

The Java rhinoceros, for its part, is found in different communities between Java and Vietnam and is the least known species and of those with the fewest specimens, preferring to take refuge in tropical jungles and also in areas that have tall grass or different marshes.

Finally, the Sumatran rhinoceros, the smallest of the rhino classes, inhabits the Borneo and Sumatra areas.

What do rhinos eat?

The feeding of the rhinoceros is really interesting because they are animals that, despite their large size and appearance, feed on plants and herbs, they are herbivorous animals.

Of course, due to their large size, they need to eat a huge amount of food daily to keep going. They tolerate foods that have a lot of fiber, being able to digest even woody plant tissues, but they really prefer to eat soft and nutritious plants. Actually, each species is adapted to consuming a different type of vegetables.

The black can break the branches of the more woody plants while the white can eat the short grasses better.

The Indians, on the other hand, can eat tall grasses and small shrubs with ease, and the Javanese and the Sumatran tend to knock down small trees to eat them. In addition, except for the white rhino, they all also eat fruits and also tend to drink every day, although if they are in desert or semi-desert areas they can spend four or up to five days without drinking anything.

How rhinos are born

Regarding the reproduction of the rhinoceros, while the female black rhinoceros are the first to be fertile, over four years, those of the white rhinoceros and the Indian usually are between five and seven years old. The males, on the other hand, will have the age to procreate from seven years old, but normally they will not reproduce until they are ten. Likewise, all species usually have only one offspring, although in some cases they have been able to have two offspring. Females usually take around two years to have a young one again.

Rhino threats

The rhinoceros has a really huge size, only surpassed by hippos and elephants on land, which, along with other characteristics, means that this animal does not have natural predators. This should result in these animals being safe in their different habitats.

But this is not the case since humans are the main threat to the rhinoceros. Poachers, although it is currently a protected species since it has been decimated by this cause, killed and continue to kill adult rhinos to get their horns, they occupy the areas where these animals live.
