This is what ants eat. How long does it take an ant to live?

Ants are omnivorous animals and therefore eat a mixture of plants and animal material. The ants' diet consists mostly of leaves, fungi, honey, nectar, small insects, and dead animals, though the specific diet of each species varies. Some ants have a more herbivorous diet, while other species eat mostly meat.

How long does an ant live

It is curious to discover how ants, despite being very small insects, can live for many years, even longer than many small mammals, something that may seem very strange. The life expectancy of ants will be determined by two factors, one of them will be the species to which they belong, since many of them will only live a few weeks after hatching, however, other species The workers can last several years, even reaching 7 years.

The ant that is going to live the longest in the entire colony will be the queen, who will be in charge of the 14 years that they can live, of supplying every day a large number of baby ants that will become workers with it. in order to improve the anthill.

Types of ants that exist :

• Queen ants

Queen ants are the founders of colonies. Once mated, they can remain fertilized for many years, depositing millions of eggs. Each day, some queens can lay thousands of eggs. The queen and also has the record of being the insect with the longest life, hovering between 1 and up to 30 years.

• Worker ant

Lesser worker ants, or simply "worker" ants, are the most common ants to find in any colony. These ants are sterile females who are the smallest but do most of the work within the colony. Some take care of the queen and young, some forage around the nest for food, while others maintain and expand the nest.

• Soldier ant

Soldier ants are also known as older or big-headed workers. They are only present in certain species of ants that are polymorphic. These sterile female ants are larger and stronger than typical worker ants. They protect the colony from large predators and use their strength and large jaws to cut and transport larger objects. In harvester species, soldiers use their strength to break open hard seeds. In leafcutter species, soldiers penetrate through thicker plants so that workers can transport cuttings back to the nest.

• Ant with wings

A princess is an infertile virgin queen, has wings, and is, therefore, a winged ant. Princesses take a flight to mate on hot, humid summer days, also known as nuptial flight. Once they have mated, they sneak to the ground, to find a suitable place to nest and lay their eggs. They clip their own wings and use them as a source of protein to feed their new family.
