What giraffe eat

To understand what the giraffe feeds on, we must know that they are ruminant animals, that is, that they have four stomachs, and slower digestion than the rest of the animals. Thanks to their physical characteristics, giraffes can access the treetops, and since their tongue is insensitive to thorns, they can feed on a wide variety of fruits and shoots, especially those that are soft and juicy and keep you from having to drink water. during days. Giraffes' diet is mainly based on acacia and myrrh, two very common trees in the African savannas. On average, a giraffe can eat up to 65 kg of food a day.

How giraffes are born

Giraffe reproduction takes place from 6 years of age when they reach sexual maturity. The males usually taste the urine of the females to determine if they are in condition to mate, and from this moment, the gestation will take between 14 and 15 months, giving rise to a single calf per parturition. Generally, the mother gives birth fully standing up, although the young fall to the ground protected by the amniotic sac.

Now that we know how the giraffe reproduces, we must also add that the young are born with 1.80 meters in height, and within a few hours of being born, they will be able to run without difficulties, although they will remain with their mother during the first weeks since they can fall victim to some predators such as lions, hyenas, and wild dogs.

What are giraffes like?

The behavior of giraffes is not aggressive, quite the opposite, they are very shy animals. They live in groups without hierarchy or coordination activities, although the specimens can defend themselves together against an imminent threat. Although they prefer to flee rather than challenge their enemies, the great power of their legs allows the giraffe to be victorious in a fight with a lion. However, this type of confrontation rarely occurs, since the giraffe, being so tall, can see any danger well in advance, and is also capable of reaching 60 kilometers per hour when running.

How many vertebrae does a giraffe have

We can think that these long-necked animals have a greater number of vertebrae than other animals, in this section we are going to tell you how many they have and the difference they have with, for example, humans. Humans have 7 cervical vertebrae, which will form our neck, which will not measure more than 10 cm. Considering this data, you can think that giraffes have many more cervical vertebrae, even hundreds of these bones, however, they have the same number of vertebrae as we do. The big difference that exists between the seven vertebrae of humans and that of giraffes is that they each measure 28 centimeters and it is the reason why the neck of these animals looks so long.
