Information about the lion jungle leader

Lions are very fierce animals given their physical strength and their qualities as great predators. These animals are capable of frightening other predators, but also humans since an attack from their paws or a bite from them can be considered death.

Scientific classification: the lion belongs to the Felidae family, within the order of carnivorous animals. Its technical name is Panthera leo. Their fur has yellowish and reddish tones. Its head is large, with strong teeth and nails. And its tail is long finished infringes. Due to its spectacularity and vigor, the lion has been known for centuries as “the king of the jungle”.

Lions, like other feline members, have an excellent sense of vision and hearing, which are especially important for locating prey. The role of the male in the herd is to protect the territory and the females. The male is characterized by his mane around the neck. This mane serves to offer a fiercer image without increasing its weight, in addition to cushioning blows.

Disputes between two lions do not usually end in a fight since the one who is at a disadvantage realizes and retires.

Lions have long, muscular bodies. Their heads are large and their limbs relatively short. Lions are robust animals, about 2 meters in length and a tail that reaches up to a meter longer. Their weight ranges between 150 and 240 kilos in the case of males and between 125 and 180 kilos in females.

In general, their lives are extended to 15 years if they live in the wild and up to 25 or more if they live in captivity. The best-fed lions have longer and thicker manes. The color of this mane varies from black to light brown. Females, on the other hand, lack this mane and their fur is light brown.

Where lions live

In ancient times, lions were distributed throughout Africa, Europe, Iran, and India. Its natural habitat has suffered reductions due in large part to the action of man in terms of the occupation of the savannas.

We locate its habitat in Africa (savannas and plains) and Asia (interior of the jungle). Normally they gather in herds, made up of several females and with one or more dominant males, although it can also be the case of herds of several males that have not achieved the dominance of a herd of females or several exiled females that unite to survive...

What do lions eat

They are carnivorous animals and usually feed on large mammals, although they also allow smaller mammals, birds, and reptiles. They are not scavengers. The amount of food that lions need is usually around 7 kilos if they are males and 5 kilos in the case of females.

Their weapons as a predator are based on their strong jaws and claws on their paws. The characteristic sound of lions is the roar, which can be heard by a person from a distance of 5 to 9 kilometers away. This sound is characteristic when lions go hunting, usually at dusk, or when the hunt has been fruitful.

They spend about 3 hours a day trying to get food. The rest of the day is spent sleeping and resting. Buffaloes and hyenas are considered their enemies.

How lions are born

Sexual maturity in lions occurs from 24-28 months if they are in captivity and at 36-48 months in freedom. Lionesses are receptive to mating more than once a year and it lasts for 3 to 4 days.

The gestation period is about 100 days, therefore the cubs will be very small at birth. Puppy mortality is quite high, so 80% of puppies do not reach two years of age. The female will mate again when her cubs are two years old. If the entire litter dies, the female will mate shortly after the last cub dies.

There are cases in which males who come to a herd kill cubs that are not theirs. This is because the lion causes the female to be more receptive to him and thus be able to leave more of her offspring.
